Scale and subscale in crack are evidence of stress cracking and the crack being open during high temperature processing

Stress cracks are transverse cracks in steel products as a result of exceeding the yield strength locally at the temperature of crack formation. Typically excessive straightening or bending loads are the cause during steel processing.
