The labor participation rate fell to 66.3 percent it’s lowest level in 34 years! Even the Huffington Post has figured out that this is a structural unemployment problem.
The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported that its summary Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) increased 1.1 points, for a February reading of 54.2. That is certainly in agreement with PMPA’s Business Trends Report for January 2013 which showed a record rise of 41% over December 2012 sales levels, which were quite low.
Despite a great start for sales in the industry at the beginning of the year, the special causes of the uncertainty leading up to the election and the ‘Fiscal Cliff’ took the wind out of our sales, resulting in PMPA’s 2012 Business Trends Index barely equalling that of 2011.
While manufacturing is back in expansion mode according to the December 2012 ISM PMI Report, Fabricated metals, of which precision machining is a component, and four of our important markets-Transportation Equipment, Machinery, Electrical Equipment, and Appliances and components remained in decline in December. The Important New orders component of the survey also remained unchanged.

Since 2007, manufacturers have added more educated workers while eliminating less skilled / less educated positions. Increasingly employers are looking for credentials for skills rather than 2 and 4 year degrees. As the baby boomer cohort leave the workforce, there are currently not enough under 25 and 25- 34 year olds to make up for their loss. This means that not only will productivity increases have to continue, but also that we need to really make an effort to bring 34 and under people into our skilled workforce in manufacturing.
